The Top 10 Kitchen Design Trends for 2023

Most homeowners don’t update their kitchens every year to keep up with the latest trends. But if it’s time to renovate your kitchen or design a brand new custom kitchen, it’s good to be aware of what’s in style right now. A classic kitchen has its place, but a kitchen with on-trend design elements is top-notch and increases your home’s value.

Riverstone’s Top 10 Kitchen Design Trends for 2023

These are the top 10 kitchen design trends we’re excited about for 2023.

1. Lower Cabinet Drawers

Lower cabinet drawers might be our favourite design trend because they’re incredibly practical. Drawers hold so much and are far more accessible and convenient than a bottom cupboard shelf.

2. Slab Backsplash

Marble, stone, or quartz slab backsplashes are replacing subway tiles. The slab backsplash can be a bold statement in your kitchen. It’s also practical because it’s seamless, so it’s easier to clean than a backsplash with grout lines.

3. Butler’s Pantry

Also referred to as a scullery, working pantry, or functional pantry, a butler’s pantry is a hidden extra room attached to your kitchen that acts as additional storage, a food prep space, or a beverage bar. The most trendy way to incorporate this right now is with customizable cabinetry panels that conceal a doorway by blending in with the rest of your kitchen.

4. Painted Island

A painted island is an affordable and easy way to update your kitchen without a complete kitchen makeover. Is your older kitchen all white? Add a vibrant splash of colour by painting the base of your kitchen island.

5. Butcher Block Island Countertop

A butcher block island countertop is a handy work surface that also adds warmth to your kitchen. Maple or walnut are excellent wood options for this purpose. If you’re concerned about how sanitary a wood countertop is, rest assured, 99.9% of the bacteria introduced to wood dies within 3 minutes. It’s actually safer than plastic.

6. Waterfall Island

Another island trend is the waterfall. It’s a dramatic way to highlight the beauty of the stone, marble, or quartz. This material is so eye-catching, so why not make it a central feature in your kitchen?

7. Textured Cabinetry

An often overlooked design component is texture. We’re used to smooth surfaces in a kitchen, but textures like patterned tile or wood slats are trending in 2023.

8. Blue & Green Colour Palette

Though soft, earthy, and warm kitchens are still trending, we’re seeing a refreshing shift to brighter blues and greens. Colour is a fun way to add interest and create contrast in your kitchen design, and blue and green are always classic colours. You can choose tones that are not too trendy, or be brave and go bold.

9. Soft, Natural Materials

Natural or stained wood, vegan leather, terracotta, painted steel, and honed limestone are some of the natural materials used in trendy kitchens to contrast sharp lines and provide softness.

10. Statement Lighting

Recessed pot lights are a practical addition to any working kitchen, but we’re seeing many designers turning to creative lighting fixtures to make a statement in the kitchen. This can be a key design element in trending kitchens of 2023.
